Dog Heartworm

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. It affects Dogs and Coyotes mainly. Heartworm disease (dirofilarosis), produced by Dirofilaria immitis, primarily affects the pulmonary arteries, producing inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and pulmonary hypertension.

Heartworm (HW) disease is caused by the filarial organism Dirofilaria immitis. At least 70 species of mosquitoes can serve as intermediate hosts.

HW infection rates in other companion animals such as ferrets and cats are lower but tend to parallel those in dogs in the same geographic region.
