Erectile Disfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to get or maintain an erection that’s firm enough for sexual intercourse. It can be a short-term or long-term problem.

ED can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
    • Physical health

Prostate problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, vascular disease, high cholesterol, chronic sleep disorders, and certain medications

    • Neurological issues

Diabetes, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord and nerve injuries, and nerve damage from pelvic operations

  • Hormonal issues

    Low testosterone

  • Psychological issues

Depression, anxiety, performance concerns, and other mental health disorders

  • Aging

ED becomes more common as you get older, but it’s not a natural part of aging

ED is treatable at any age, and almost all cases are treatable. Treatments can include medications, exercise, weight loss, and smoking cessation.

ED can be an indicator of systemic endothelial dysfunction and often precedes cardiovascular events. A doctor can assess your cardiovascular health and may order tests to check for high blood pressure, heart abnormalities, and other conditions.
