Why do you need a prescription for pet food?

If your cat has been diagnosed with a chronic or short-term illness or is recovering from surgery, your veterinarian may prescribe them a prescription cat food. Prescription cat foods offer targeted nutrition for a range of illnesses. Though they can be expensive, they are formulated to be therapeutic and help with a particular medical condition.

What a “sensitive” prescription food does is replace traditional ingredients like chicken and beef with alternatives such as corn starch, chicken liver, and rabbit meal.

Many pets are likely to develop sensitivities to “novel” protein sources like rabbit or kangaroo if exposed to them over a long period of time.
