Topical Antiseptics

About Topical Antiseptic

Topical antiseptics have been used for centuries in the management of wounds. Most antiseptic agents are intended for use on intact skin, e.g. for hand hygiene or for skin preparation prior to a surgical procedure.

The use of topical antiseptics to treat patients with minor skin infections has been proposed as a potential solution to the problem of increasing resistance to topical antibiotics.

Antiseptic agents have a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity and exert their effects on cellular metabolism through a variety of mechanisms, which means that they are associated with lower levels of resistance.
