Description
Azathioprine is prescribed to treat immune diseases, such as the rupturing of red blood cells, certain types of kidney disease, autoimmune skin diseases, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It works by lowering immune system function and may be used in combination with other drugs to suppress the immune system. Customers may receive this drug under the name Imuran.

Uses
Azathioprine is an immunosuppressive used for treating a variety of autoimmune diseases. It can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, immune mediated anemia, colitis, immune mediated skin disease, certain types of kidney disease, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Azathioprine may also be used for purposes as indicated by your veterinarian.

Possible Side Effects	Side effects may include anemia, pale gums, weakness, lethargy, bruising or bleeding, decreased white blood cell counts and increased risk of infection. Talk to your vet about unusual side effects.
Drug & Food Interactions	Tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given ACE inhibitors (benazepril, enalapril, lisinopril), Allopurinol, Sulfasalazine, SMZ/TMP, and warfarin. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with azathioprine. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medicines including vitamins, and supplements.
Precautions	Pet parents should wear gloves when giving this medication as it can absorb through the skin. Pregnant pet parents should not handle this medication unless wearing rubber gloves. Use azathioprine with caution in animals with pancreatic or liver disease. Do not use in pregnant or breeding animals or in those who are allergic to azathioprine. This medication suppresses the immune system which may make your pet more prone to infections. This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
Recommended Dosage	Give by mouth according to your medical instructions. The dose of this medication and frequency of administration is based on the condition and response to the treatment.
