Famotidine is prescribed to treat multiple digestive disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including ulcers. These tablets may help by reducing the production of acid in the stomach and GI tract and may also help treat reflux and inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis). Customers may receive this drug under the name Pepcid.

Famotidine is prescribed to help pets who suffer from a variety of digestive disorders including ulcers, gastritis, and reflux.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

Possible Side Effects

Famotidine is tolerated well in most pets, but a loss of appetite and lethargy have been reported. If a pet seems ill while taking Famotidine, call your veterinarian as soon as possible for further advice.
Drug & Food Interactions

Discuss all medications and supplements the pet is currently taking with your veterinarian prior to giving Famotidine. Some interactions have been reported with other antacids, metoclopramide, sucralfate, digoxin, and ketoconazole. Other interactions are possible. Famotidine should be given 2 hours before or after other medications have been given unless your veterinarian instructs you differently.
Precautions

Do not administer this medication if a pet has a known allergy to Famotidine or other histamine blockers. Give Famotidine with extreme caution in older animals, animals with heart, liver, or kidney disease or pregnant animals. Famotidine can sometimes cause a low white blood cell count especially in animals that are taking other bone marrow suppressing drugs such as azathioprine.
