Description

Valproic acid is a drug used in veterinary medicine to treat seizure disorders in dogs and cats. Valproic acid is typically not given as the primary method of seizure control because it has a very short half-life in pets and is eliminated from their bodies rapidly, making it difficult to maintain effective blood levels. Instead, it is sometimes used in conjunction with other anticonvulsive drugs (such as phenobarbital). It is occasionally used in dogs with refractory seizures (seizures that are difficult to manage with standard therapies). This drug is not approved for use in animals by the Food and Drug Administration, but it is prescribed legally by veterinarians as an extra-label drug.

Uses
Valproic acid is used to help control seizures, almost exclusively in conjunction with other anticonvulsant medications when primary treatments are not completely effective.

Possible Side Effects

Gastrointestinal Upset: Vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite are the most common side effects.
Liver Toxicity (Hepatotoxicity): This is a significant risk in dogs. Severe liver damage can occur, which may be life-threatening.
Neurological Effects: Sedation, drowsiness, lethargy, or occasional behavioral changes.
Dermatological Issues: Hair loss (alopecia) may occur in some animals.
Birth Defects: Valproic acid is highly teratogenic, meaning it can cause severe developmental abnormalities in fetuses.
Drug & Food Interactions

Drug Interactions: Valproic acid interacts significantly with other medications, most notably Phenobarbital. When used together, valproic acid can alter the metabolism of phenobarbital, potentially leading to dangerous phenobarbital toxicity. It can also interact with phenytoin, aspirin, cimetidine, certain antibiotics (like erythromycin), and other central nervous system depressants.

Food Interactions: There are no major negative food interactions. In fact, administering valproic acid with a meal is highly recommended, as food helps to significantly reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Precautions

Liver Disease: This medication is strictly contraindicated in animals with pre-existing liver disease or impaired liver function due to its high potential for hepatotoxicity.

Pregnancy and Nursing: Do not use in pregnant breeding animals due to the high risk of birth defects, and avoid use in nursing mothers as the drug passes into milk.

Monitoring: Frequent veterinary monitoring is absolutely required. This includes regular blood tests to evaluate liver enzymes and measure the blood concentration of both valproic acid and any concurrent seizure medications (like phenobarbital).

Abrupt Withdrawal: Never stop giving valproic acid suddenly without consulting a veterinarian. Abrupt discontinuation can trigger severe, continuous seizures (status epilepticus).
