Erythromycin 0.5% Ophthalmic Ointment is a prescription antibiotic prepared specifically to treat bacterial infection in the eye and eyelid. It is used in dogs for the effective treatment of superficial ocular infections of the conjunctiva or cornea caused by bacterial strains such as N. gonorrhoeae or C. trachomatis.
Uses
Erythromycin 0.5% Ophthalmic Ointment is used for topical therapy of external eye infections—it stops the growth of bacteria and the spread of infections.
Erythromicin is contraindicated in animals with a known hypersensitivity to this drug or those, which are allergic to dyes or preservatives. It should not be used in the eyes, if the pet is already suffering from a viral or fungal eye infection as it is effective only for bacterial infections. Its safety in pregnant and nursing pets is not established hence it is advisable to take the veterinarian's advice in this regard. The sterility of the medicine should be strictly maintained and the applicator should not come into contact with the eyes of the pet. The medicine should not be used more often than directed and the full course of treatment has to be completed even if the condition improves.
Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare during treatment with this medication. However, some minor side effects such as blurred vision, burning, irritation, itching or redness of eyes and sensitivity to light may occur. In such cases, the veterinarian could be consulted to decide the future course of action.

Human Label
It is presented in 3.5 gm tube and the dosage depends on the severity of the infection.
Wash hands before applying the ointment.
Wipe any excess debris from around the eye.
Apply a thin layer of ointment inside the eyes and normally it could be applied 2-3 times a day as an initial dosage which could be systematically reduced as and when an improvement is registered.
It is important that you don't touch the ointment tube to the eye area or touch it with your hand, it is sterile and doing so could cause an infection.
Re cap the ointment tube to maintain cleanliness of the opening.
The medicine should be stored at room temperature and should not be refrigerated.
Never use any unused ointment after the expiration date.
